One weekend with the Nikon D200 equip with the 70-200 2.8 VR and 16-85 3.5-5.6 VR lens, I decided to take a trip to Huntington Library in San Marino, California.

HDR is High Density Resolution. It is a process when using several RAW format images and combine them together to produce one single 32-bit image. The largest benefit of it is to allow you to take multiple pictures using different exposure to capture each area well.

What’s In The Number?

A RIM OS has three version numbers:

Software (4.7.0.148)

The software is basically everything that the phone does. From the SMS App, to BlackBerry Messenger, it is composed of all the applications that comes by default on your BlackBerry.

It is also the number people usualy refer to when talking about an OS release. In case of the latest Verizon update, it is 4.7.0.148.
Platform (4.0.0.181)

The platform is basically the “drivers” to the OS. It is the layer responsible of communicating commands to the hardware. It controls the cell phone radio, screen display, power regulation as well as the bluetooth radio. It is commonly refered to as the radio file on CrackBerry.

In case of Verizon’s latest release, the platform number is 4.0.0.181.
Package (4.7.0.203)

RIM develops the software and platform separately. When they decide to put the two together for testing, they give the combo a version number. This is the package number. Arguably, this should be number used to refer to a particular OS number, but convention uses the software number instead.

In case of Verizon’s latest release, the package version is 4.7.0.203.
When two releases have the same package number, it is safe to assume that they are the exact same release. The leaked version of the Verizon’s release has the same package number, therefore it is the same.

There is also another number reported in your about screen:

Branding Version

The Branding Version changes from phone to phone and doesn’t change on an OS update. Is will always be the same on your phone. Branding is saved on special memory while in factory.

The version number is formated the following way:

1.0.XXX.YYY

Where XXX is your Vendor ID and YYY is the Revision Number. Here are possible Vendor IDs (That I know of):

If you are a current Verizon Wireless subscriber and wish to use another carrier SIM card, follow the methods below. It is useful in cases such as, you have one line for personal and another line for business. Or another scenario is you travel oversee to a GSM zone. You could purchase a pre-paid SIM card and stick it in.

Call 1-888-844-0395 to reach Verizon Global Phone Support Line. Tell them you would like to unlock your Blackberry Storm. They will ask to verify you are the phone owner and will read to you some legal stuff. Afterwards, they will give you the unlock code.

To unlock the phone, the original Verizon Wireless SIM card must be in the phone.

1. Go to Options -> Advanced Options -> SIM Card
2. Flip your phone to horizontal mode and bring up the keyboard. To bring up the keyboard, hit the BlackBerry button and press Show Keyboard.
3. Type “MEPD” without the quotes. This will bring up the SIM Card screen.
4. You should see a list of Active and Disabled SIM locking categories.
5. This time type “MEP2″
6. You should get a dialog that says “Enter Network MEP code (10 left):”
7. Enter the SIM unlock code you got from Verizon and hit the Enter button.
***MAKE SURE YOU TYPE IT EXACTLY AS YOU WERE GIVEN IT*** If you type it incorrect 10 times, you will render your phone useless. If it doesnt work after the first 2 times, call Verizon back and verify the number you got is right.

Now that it is unlocked:
1. Pull the battery out and pull the Verizon SIM card out. Easiest way is with a pencil eraser.
2. Put the new SIM card from either TMobile of ATT in and put the battery back in.
3. When the phone finally boots back up go to Options -> Mobile Network
4. Change the Network Technology to GSM/UMTS
5. Hit the back button and wait as your GSM carrier is detected and the phone is registered with them.

After purchased one, to my little amazement, there was a little known function on the Blackberry Storm utilizing a magnet in the case to put it in standby mode. People refer this as Sleeper Magnet.

How it works?

If your phone is on, when you place the phone inside these cases, the phone automatically goes to sleep, NOT OFF, but standby mode. You can still receive calls, messages, etc. If you bump into things or accidentally press a button while it is in the case, it won’t turn the phone on. Once you take it out of the case, it will turn on.

If you screen lock your phone and place it in side these cases, when you remove it from the case, it automatically unlock the phone for you.

Where To Find

Most phone cases stating Blackberry Storm compatible and has a magnet inside it. The one I purchased was the Eddie Bauer Case.

The was a rush release with a extremely unstable OS. The lag and lack of response turned people away to Apple iPhone and other phones alternative.

Now fast forward a few months and several OS versions later, I have to say it is heading in the right direction. The latest software for the BB Storm 9530 does improve on stability and functionality. The scrolling is a lot smoother with less lag. The keyboard type response has dramatically improved. You still have some bugs, but that it is now at a stage what it should’ve been in the first place when it first launched last year.

As of right now, the official released version for Verizon Wireless is 4.7.0.075. For the most part, this is still better than what came originally when it was released. If you recently purchased a phone, make sure the Verizon Wireless store upgrade the firmware for you to the latest official version prior you taking the device home. If you want to do the upgrade yourself, follow these steps (HERE).

The latest leaked version for Verizon Wireless is .113. There have been some rumor Verizon might skip this version entirely and go with a few version later as an official release. Nonetheless, it is still better than what came with it last year.

At the same time, Bell released their latest version .122. This version from Bell is their Offical Released version. Upgrading to either one of these version will surely bring smile to most Storm users today and future Storm users.

As mention earlier, buying the Storm a few months ago was not a good idea. But now with the later software released, it is a solid buy. I highly recommended to people who are interested in an iPhone alternative. The OS is simple to use, it has iTune sync functionality, and backed by RIIM famous push email functionality.

Instructions for installing either version on ANY carrier’s 9530:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named “vendor.xml.”
3. Plug in BB and double click on “Loader.exe.” It’s located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it’s done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says “waiting for initialization.”
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

How To Update To A Leaked / Beta OS

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Download the leaked OS
  2. Back up data on Desktop Manager under Back up/restore option. NOTE: If you get an error during this process, clear your browser cache (Browser > Menu Key > options > cache operation > clear all of them)
  3. Back up your 3rd party apps. How to backup 3rd party applications
  4. Disconnect your BB from Desktop Manager
  5. Download desired OS to your PC
  6. Install/run OS to PC
  7. If you are NOT on Verizon, delete vendor.xml file. It’s located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
  8. Connect BB to Desktop Manager and it should
  9. Click Application Loader
  10. Click Update
  11. At this point, disconnect your computer from the internet
  12. Select the OS you would like to load and continue
  13. Do not unplug BB during the process. It will take around 20-90 minutes to complete upgrade.

Scroll through the list until you find the one entry that is in BOLD. Highlight it, click the BB Button, and click Register Now.

Tips / Tricks / Hacks

  • To enable the “External GPS” icon, you will need to do a registry hack. Open your favorite registry editor and go to

HKLM -> ControlPanel -> GPS Settings

Delete the key “Redirect” and do a soft reboot. See screenshot of it below.

Before you begin, make sure to download the Samsung Omnia UMDL and the Samsung i910 Firmware update on the right.

*TIPS BEFORE STARTING*

*Backup your data and do a hard reset to avoid any mishaps.

*Make sure your phone is more than 50% charged. It does not take long to update the firmware, but if it dies in the middle of the install, it will not come back to life.

*Be careful with overheating the battery, it will cause the phone to shut off as well.

Do not plug the phone into the computer until you are told in step 7.

STEP 1: Make sure that the active sync connections on your computer is set so to *DO NOT ALLOW USB CONNECTIONS.

Step 2: In your phone settings, switch the USB connection from active sync to sync with Mass Storage. Then turn off your phone until later.

Step 3: Open the Samsung Omnia UMDL

Step 4: Select Unified Image File (*img) and search for the samsung i910 firmware (i910WM6.1.REV10.CC20.VZW.img)

Step 5: Click the detect button

Step 6: Plug in your phone while it is still turned off.

Step 7: When you plug it in, turn on the phone.

Step8: Your phone should have been detected and the firmware should be written to the disc. Wait for the blue highlight on the UMDL.

Step 9: It should be rebooting and you will need to setup windows again.

Step 10: To turn the GPS on, go to settings -> Phone -> GPS -> Change settings from 911 to location on.

Step 11: Soft reset the phone

TROUBLESHOOTING

If your phone needs to be programmed, press *228 and hit option 1. Also do option 2 to update the prl.

If your phone needs to be authenticated, you have 2 options.

1: Go to your verizon wireless account and switch the esn to a different phone. Go to the other phone and dial *228 option 1 to program it. Wait a few minutes and then change the esn back to the omnia. do *228 option 1 on the omnia to pogram it back.

2: Call verizon tech, tell them you did a hard reset on your phone and it needs to be authenticated.

If your phone shuts off randomly, take the battery out for a while and let it cool off.

  • Bring Up Contact List w/Send Key

Holding the “Send” key for a few seconds will bring up the contact list istead of the number pad

  • Quick Vibration Mode Change

While in lock status, holding the “Mute” button will put it in vibration mode.

  • Uptime Screen (from Crackberry)

In portrait:
!?123 (alt), hold down a couple secs to lock, then 1 ? 7 1

In landscape:
!?123 (alt), hold down a couple seconds to lock, then 2 * 9 2

This will tell you your Signal Strenght, Battery Level, among other things.

  • To activate capital lock

bring up the onscreen keyboard and then hold down the “Shift/Arrow Up” key for about two seconds until a lock appears on that button. The number pad will then stay on screen until you either hide it or tap the “Shift/Arrow Up” key again to return to the normal keyboard layout.

  • To quickly hide the Storm’s keyboard

swipe a finger downward from the top of the keyboard to the very bottom of the device’s Screen

  • Call your voicemail without having to enter password each time

1. Click on CALL button (green button)
2. Press BB button (Blackberry button)
3. Scroll and click on OPTIONS
4. Click on VOICE MAIL
5. Under “Password”, enter two pauses by pressing BB button twice
6. Now type in your 4 digit password after the pauses.
7. It should look like PP1234 under “Password”

So now, when you press and hold down 1, it will call your voicemail and will pause automatically and enters your password for you.

Home Screen Icon Settings
While in main menu, hit the BB menu key. Select Options. In the Set Home Screen Icon Layout, you can choose 1 – 3 Rows. One row will give you more screen real estate for your wallpaper. In addition, Wallpaper can be changed here too.
Note – while in the main menu, the icons in the top row is what will appear on the Home Screen.

Main Menu Settings / Move Icons
Icons can be placed however you want them. Highlight one > press menu > select Move > tap where you want it to be > press menu > select Complete Move. Alternatively, once an icon is highlighted, you can press the menu button twice. Press where you want the icon located, then press menu twice again to complete the move.

Icon Settings
The number of icons per row can be set from 1 icon per row to 4 icons per row.
Menu > Options > Advanced Options > Accessibility. Home Screen Grid Layout. Be sure to hit menu > Save after changing any settings.
(Contrast can also be set in this screen. Reverse Contrast is worth looking at..)

Select links while browsing the internet
With the browser open, a row of icons is at the bottom of the screen. Tap on the one in the middle, an arrow (cursor). Now when you move your finger across the screen, the cursor will follow. Move it over any link and press. Very accurate!

Edit text that you have already typed.
Hold your finger over the text, anywhere in the text you’ve typed, the outline of a rectangle will appear. Now, slide your finger throughout the text and the outline will follow. Tap the screen to place the cursor to begin editing.

Typing
It seems that if you use your left thumb (while typing in landscape) to press a key on the right side of the screen, or vice versa, it presses the wrong key. It’s like there is a center plane. If you keep your left thumb to the left and right to the right, accuracy and speed will be much improved!

Number Lock
Hold down the !?123 button on the keyboard. A tiny lock will appear in the upper left hand portion of the key. Now, type all the numbers and symbols you want! Pressing the !?123 button again will remove the lock.

Keyboard Show/Hide
With the keyboard showing, swipe downwards over it to have it hidden. If it’s hidden, swipe up on the screen to have it appear. If these methods fail, you can always hit the menu key and select Show or Hide keyboard.

Vibrate Mode
Holding the mute button while locked will put your phone in vibrate mode.

Browsing
Touching (but not pressing) a webpage while browsing will put the toolbar away and vice versa. Enables full screen browsing.

Switching Applications
Holding the BB key (menu) down will bring up the application switcher. You can also set a convenience key to do the same. It will show the most used applications and let you toggle to them. I understand that there is nothing similar to Windows Task Manager to let us close all active applications. Be sure to use Menu > Close or Exit if you are concerned that too many applications may be running.

Retrieve Contacts
Holding the Send key for a short duration will bring up the contacts list instead of the number pad.

Email/SMS/MMS recipients
After addressing a message to one or more recipients who have more than one email address assigned to their name(s), you can hover your finger over each name to see which address you chose. Allowing you to verify you chose the right one before sending.

Setting up your phone Blackberry email address
Main Menu > Setup > Email Settings > Create your Blackberry email address. You now have an email account accessible only from your Blackberry.
Note – If you need to send a large file, a large MMS for example, to another Blackberry user, you can bypass the MMS file size limit (although it has recently been raised) by sending as an email to their Blackberry phone email address. (I sent a 1.2 mb MMS today using it. Never would happen using the traditional MMS process.)

Creating and Editing your BIS account and settings
While in Email Setup, press Menu and select Create Username. Create your username and password. Now, you’ll be able to log into the BIS site (https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=vzw&locale=en) and apply filters, etc., to your email accounts. Note – this is different than the username/password for your Blackberry email address. You can also edit the “Sent from my Blackberry” signature here.

Sending Message
Instead of pressing Menu, highlighting and pressing send, just press the Blackberry Key (menu) twice.

Free-up Memory (thanks cx)
In landscape mode, BB key > Show Keyboard > Press & hold the !?123 key to enable Num lock > Press “/”/ (The event log will appear) > BB Key > Clear Log > BB Key > Close. (This can be done from the homescreen.)

Search Email Sender
Hold your finger over the received email for a couple of seconds and it will automatically do a search for and display only emails from that sender. Note – this does not appear to work with SMS and MMS.

Music into Ringtones
Any song loaded into your Music media library can be made a ringtone by BB Key > Set as Ringtone.

Deleting Multiple Messages
In any Inbox, tap and hold on one message. With a finger on it, touch to highlight another message. All messages in between will be highlighted too. You do not have to continue touching the first message – just touch up or down the list of messages and all will be highlighted. Great for mass deleting.

Misc
I’ve been hearing that GPS works with Google Maps only if you do not open and use VZW navigator first. Apparently, VZW Navigator ‘locks’ the aGPS system to itself and disallows other programs from accessing it. (This is still up in the air from what I’ve read, so please correct me if I’m mistaken).

Mini USB – Micro USB Adapter

I am sure all of you might be in the same boat as I am. If you are a long time Windows Mobile user or a Blackberry user (i.e. Pearl), you might have tons of mini power cable or USB cable laying around the house. It is pointless to spend $30.00 on a new power cable, car charger, or a USB cable. Luckily, there is a solution. A Mini USB to Micro USB adapter for under $10.00 solved the problem! (click on pictures below for more detail).


Jabra BT 3030

I was curious how the A2DP Bluetooth function works, so I went out and purchase the Jabra BT-3030. I have to say, it is a pretty niffty device. It allows me to use whatever headset I want (i.e.: Bose Quiet Comfort 2, Shure Earbud, etc.,).  I’ve used with my Bose QC2 and it worked nicely. The Jabra BT-3030 has a microphone jack, so you can also use it to take calls too. I already have the Motorola H12 and on order the Plantronic 925, so I’ll just use this to listen to music. Useful when I can leave my phone charging or dock at my desk, and still listen to music while I am around about. It is especially great for the gym, don’t have to carry an ipod and my phone at the same time now. It uses bluetooth signal to control the media player on the Omnia. Not too bad!

I recently had to replace my Motorola H12 because it went bad. This is a nice replacement. Fairly comfortable, the travel case is actual an extended battery mobile charger, and the sound was crisp. You should check it out.
